Simon Allen

Carved wood & gold leaf

The natural beauty of the Cornish landscape is something that sculptor Simon Allen finds profoundly moving, and is the focus of much of his work.

The ripples, undulations, peaks and troughs of his wood carvings are a reflection of how Allen sees the often dramatic scenery of Cornwall, whilst also acting as a trace of the energetic and physical carving process itself. The meticulous application of gesso and the gentle brushing on and burnishing of gold leaf adds a more contemplative and reflective aspect to the work.
