Take a Tour:
A Statement from the Curator

"In the 19th-century, Glasgow was paired with London as one of the UK’s most important industrial and cultural cities. Also leading in the arts, the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art was founded in 1845, shaping generations of artists and designers even to this day.
Glasgow is now a vital creative centre, particularly for working-class and emerging artists. Many draw inspiration from Scotland’s dramatic landscapes, the city’s industrial history, and its strong sense of community and inclusivity. From photography and weaving to linocut and printmaking, Glasgow’s artistic output is diverse, expressive, and grounded to its city.
While Edinburgh is often described as Scotland’s artistic capital, Glasgow offers an equal and powerful alternative, defined by innovation, authenticity, and a distinctive urban character. This project celebrates Glasgow’s rich heritage, from traditional craft to contemporary print, embracing work that is playful yet serious, and deeply connected to both the city and the surrounding natural landscape."

The Reception
Julia Complin, Summer Meanderings (2024)

Handwoven tapestry
Through the heritage craft of weaving, this work celebrates Scotland’s natural world. Using locally-sourced yarn, the deliberate layering of thread builds depth and movement, echoing the colours of Scotland’s mountains and moorlands.

About the Artist
Shortlisted for the 2025 John Ruskin Prize, Julia Complin's practice is rooted in a lifelong fascination with landscape, weather and material, shaped by childhood memories of rain soaked gardens in London and later by studying geology, where extensive fieldwork deepened her attention to land, texture and form.
Complin also spent years designing woven textiles for the fashion, interior and transport industries across Europe, North America and Japan, which refined her technical approach. Today, she designs and hand-weaves textile artworks to wear or hang, working from an old weaver’s cottage near St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Living close to nature, she draws constant inspiration from weather, colour and the scale of wild landscapes, which continue to shape and energise her work.
The Main Lounge
Callum Russell, Glasgow Architecture (2025)

Limited-edition linocut prints
The industrial soul of Glasgow is magnified through a series of hand-printed works, offering glimpses into the city’s overlooked urban corners. Finished in monochrome, the linoprint technique celebrates Glasgow’s cutting-edge architecture in its simplest form.

About the Artist
Callum Russell is an Edinburgh-based artist and illustrator whose practice centres on linocut. He creates detailed urban scenes drawn from everyday experiences of the city, shaped by long walks and close observation, echoing Charles Baudelaire’s idea of the flâneur; a curious wanderer who moves through the city, observing its rhythms, details and fleeting moments.
Russell looks for visually striking moments, such as contrasting architecture, bold shadows and repeating patterns, which he records in photographs and translates into carefully composed linocut works. Each piece is carved by hand, with close attention to detail and structure, transforming observations of the city into bold yet finely balanced compositions. Through light, shadow and intricate mark-making, his work captures both the vessel of the city and the atmosphere of the lives unfolding within it.
Artelier Studios, Haste ye back! 2025

Mixed media collage
Layered paint and texture capture the grit of Glasgow’s creative scene, playfully expressed through muted colour and monochromatic photography. Accents of red and brown pay homage to Glasgow’s iconic and historic sandstone buildings.

About the Artist
At Artelier's Bristol-based studio, the design team works directly with skilled artists and a small, carefully selected group of creatives who collaborate exclusively with Artelier. Closely working with the artists in-person ensures Artelier can be there to support the research, testing and making at every stage.
The Private Lounge
John Farnan, Stillness and Movement (2025)

Fine art photography
Each photograph documents the ever-changing rhythm of Glasgow, from its architecture to its vibrant streets. The pulse of Glasgow becomes frozen in time through monochromatic colours that immortalise its urban history.

About the Artist
Based in the Glasgow area, John Farnan works primarily with traditional film photography, producing work that ranges from intimate prints to large-scale aluminium pieces exhibited internationally. He works across 35mm, medium format and large format film, printing by hand in a purpose-built darkroom.
Rooted in classic photographic processes, his practice focuses on monochrome imagery, long exposures, panoramic formats and pinhole photography. The resulting images create a distinctive urban noir, where timeless architecture is set amongst the movement and energy of contemporary city life.
