Ian Kirkpatrick

About
Ian Kirkpatrick, a Canadian contemporary artist based in London, creates bold, iconographic works inspired by art history, from ancient cave art to digital culture, responding to the site-specific histories of buildings and communities. He has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with major public commissions including the London 2012 Olympics and Oxford University Museum.
Digital iconography
When working on public artworks, Ian undertakes a significant amount of research into a site’s history, via archival research, site visits, discussions with clients, and single or multi-part workshops with communities.

He translates the key images, stories and facts he discovers into a body of icons and symbols, which he then arranges into modern narratives about the site’s past, present, and imagined future.

He produces this iconography digitally using vector-based software, making it easy to modify, enlarge and adjust the graphics to fit the unique shapes of a building.
