Michelle Gagliano, an American artist, creates poetic artworks where the fluidity of nature converges with delicate materials like gold, crafting a harmonious dialogue between the natural and the human. Her luminous pieces are showcased in prestigious institutions worldwide.

Earth pigments, organic oils & shell gold

Michelle Gagliano’s paintings are an evocative response to landscape, expressing the transient qualities of nature and the ethereal expanses of sea, land or sky.

Within the surface of each painting, Gagliano applies her own unique medium by grinding raw earth pigments, blending extracted nut oils, and infusing essential lavender solvents.

The powerful effect of these combined materials is further intensified through Gagliano’s refined use of gold, which she exploits for its enduring quality and ability to catch light, making her work both veiled and glowing.

Recognition & Awards

Gagliano's work is held in the permanent collections of many prominent museums, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA, the Accademia di Raffaello and the Casa Natale di Raffaello Museum, Urbino, Italy, the Burchfield Penny Art Center, Buffalo, N.Y, the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, Utah, and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. She is the recipient of the VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship and has participated in residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) and the Chautauqua School of Fine Arts. In 2025, her work was the subject of an artist monograph, Michelle Gagliano: Cultivating the Sublime, published by Silvana Editoriale, Milan.
