Discover 4 Unique Mural Artists Taking a Contemporary Approach to Mural Art

At Artelier Art Consultancy, our team of art consultants hold two decades of knowledge in mural art & feature wall design, & our expert art advisors have hand-selected four artists taking a unique approach to mural art.

As Keith Haring once said, "When I paint, it is an experience that, at its best, is transcending reality". This truly captures the nature of mural art and its intention: to blur the boundaries between the artwork and reality, to obscure the traditional function of space. Mural art extends beyond traditional framed artwork and becomes a keyhole into the artists' very own creative minds. We may gaze upon what once was a wall and become lost in a landscape of naturalistic beauty. Mural art has the ability to transcend space and time, offering a unique approach to interior design. So, if you're debating between wallpapers or trying to select an artwork that fits your 4-meter-tall walls, our art advisors may have an art mural solution for you.

  1. Ian Kirkpatrick

Colourful illustrative mural on stained glass windows at the natural history museum by artist Ian Kirkpatrick

Globally renowned contemporary mural artist Ian Kirkpatrick creates uniquely crafted visual stories that respond to both the narrative of their location and the architecture on which they are constructed. His visionary practice extends not only across walls, but across large sculptures that become enwrapped with his signature illustrative iconography.

Ian’s mural artworks feature a nostalgia and merriment that many contemporary spaces shy away from, by introducing his designs into a space, colour is welcomed and joy is echoed throughout. The mural art of Ian Kirkpatrick can be found across the UK and internationally. His portfolio includes major public art commissions, for example, the 2012 London Olympics & Oxford University Museum.

  1. Claire Basler

Botanical mural artwork in a home by the artist Claire Basler

Painting from the ever-inspiring Chateau de Beauvoir she calls home, Claire Basler takes a more traditionalist approach to mural art with depictions in botany. Producing out of the Chateau de Beauvoir, Claire is shrouded in forestry and natural forms. The botanical treasure trove and enormous walls of the Chateau allow Claire to transform every crevice of her home into her very own artist's wall.

Claire’s work blurs the boundaries of contemporary art practice and traditional art forms, combining mural art with traditional depictions of delicate flora and botany. The mural art of Claire Basler can be found across walls all over Europe, with work also showcased in Russia and the US.

  1. Mark Evans

Welsh-born artist Mark Evans is a pioneer in etched leather art. Mark creates dominating contemporary depictions, from people to wildlife, taking a distinctive approach to mural art.

Trained as a draughtsman and sculptor, Mark works with surgical precision to emulate hyper-realistic iconography engraved upon leather hides.

While Mark’s work requires leather as its surface, he has produced numerous pieces that can be defined as mural art due to the scale and application, stretching from ceiling to floor. Mark has been endorsed by the renowned YBA artist, Tracey Emin, and his mural art pieces are featured in collections worldwide.

  1. Lew French

Ancient stone and wood mural art by artist Lew French

American-born artist Lew French is hailed for the rebirth of ancient stone mural art. The term ‘mural’ is a term widely used for the application of a graphic design onto a wall. However, Lew transforms this concept of mural art through his application of ancient stones and wood directly onto the mural site. Organic materials begin to form cohesive structures that sit delicately on the feature wall without the need to apply grout.

Lew’s technical ability offers an alternative approach to mural art, one where balance is left to the laws of nature. This balance of nature is further intensified by bringing the outdoors in. Lew has worked on notable collections and is celebrated for his role as designer, architect, engineer and maker, making his mural art a completely unique choice.
